SMS messaging & consent

For carrier and compliance review (public)

This page describes how consumers (players) opt in to receive SMS messages from Ohh Snaps for optional game features run by event hosts using our platform. This is separate from marketing email; SMS is used to deliver game-related messages (for example, consent confirmation, clue links, a join link and a rejoin code) only after the consumer takes clear affirmative steps. There are three points at which a consumer can opt in, and all three are described below.

1. Where consent is collected

Consent is collected on our player web apps (hosted application URLs provided by the event organizer). In every case the consumer types their own number into a form on one of those pages.

1a. Joining a hunt that is already running (double opt-in)

The consumer:

  • Opens the hunt from a QR code or link provided by the event organizer.
  • Enters a display name and a mobile phone number they control.
  • Submits the form to request joining the hunt. The interface states that we will send a text to confirm participation and to send clue-related messages, and it names the organizing entity running that hunt.
  • Receives a single SMS asking them to reply YES to confirm that they want to join and to receive hunt messages. That message reads: “Ohh Snaps: Reply YES to join ‘[hunt name]’ & get hunt clues by text. Msg frequency varies. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to opt out.” Joining is only completed after this confirmation.

This two-step process (web request + SMS reply) is a clear double opt-in for recurring messages tied to that session.

1b. Joining the waiting list for a hunt that has not started (checkbox opt-in)

When a consumer opens a hunt link before the host has started the session, the page offers a waiting list instead. The consumer enters a mobile number (a name is optional) and must tick a checkbox that reads: “Text me a one-time link to join when this hunt starts, plus clue texts during the game. By checking this you agree to receive automated SMS from Ohh Snaps; msg frequency varies. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply STOP to cancel, HELP for help.” The checkbox is unticked by default and the form links to these Terms and this Privacy Policy.

When the host starts the hunt, each opted-in number receives one message containing the join link. There is no SMS reply step on this path — the ticked checkbox is the consent.

1c. Trivia with prizes (one-time verification code)

A trivia game the host has set up with prizes requires a verified phone number, so that a score stays tied to one player. The consumer types their mobile number into the join screen, which states that by entering it they agree to be contacted by the host about that game's prize, and receives a one-time verification code by SMS which they type back into the page. That code is the only message this path sends.

1d. Trivia without prizes (optional rejoin code)

In a trivia game without prizes, no contact details are asked for at all unless the consumer ticks an optional box reading “Keep me posted — I opt in to updates, offers, or event news from the host or organizer (optional).” Ticking it reveals an optional email-or-phone field, under a line stating that we will also text or email a rejoin code so the consumer can get back into the game. Where a mobile number is given there, we send one message containing that rejoin code.

2. What messages are sent

  • Consent / join: A message prompting the consumer to reply YES to join the hunt and receive texts for that activity (path 1a).
  • Hunt start: A single message telling a waiting-list consumer that the hunt has started, with the link to join it (path 1b).
  • Gameplay: Messages may include links to clue content (for example, the next step in the hunt), and a message when the consumer finishes. Frequency depends on how the game is run (typically a small number of messages per session). Every gameplay message carries the line “Reply STOP to opt out.”
  • Verification: For a prize trivia game, a one-time verification code (path 1c).
  • Rejoin code: For a non-prize trivia game where the consumer opted in and gave a mobile number, a single message carrying that game's rejoin code (path 1d).

We do not send marketing or promotional SMS through any of these flows. We do not sell phone numbers to third parties for unrelated marketing through this flow.

3. Opt-out (STOP) and help (HELP)

Consumers can opt out of hunt SMS by replying STOP. We also honour STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END and QUIT. Replying any of them removes the number from every hunt session it is currently in, stops further messages, and causes the play links already sent to that number to stop working. We reply once to confirm, and that confirmation states that replying START rejoins.

Replying HELP (or INFO) returns a help message naming the program, stating that message frequency varies and that message and data rates may apply, repeating the STOP instruction, and giving info@ohh-snaps.com as the support address. Standard message and data rates may apply.

4. Privacy

How we handle personal data more broadly is described in our Privacy Policy.
